Ponferrada Old Town Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet in front of the Ponferrada Castle, one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses built by the Knights Templar in Spain. This imposing medieval Templar castle marks the beginning of our walking tour through the historic heart of Ponferrada.
We'll start by strolling along Gil y Carrasco Street, one of the old town's main thoroughfares, before reaching Plaza de la Encina, home to the city's patron saint and the beautiful Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Encina. Along the way, we'll discover the important role Ponferrada played on the Camino de Santiago, welcoming pilgrims since the 11th century.
Our tour will then take us through the charming medieval streets of the old town, where we'll admire historic manor houses, traditional architecture, and landmarks such as the former Royal Stables and the Radio Museum, housed inside the elegant García de las Llanas Manor House.
Next, we'll pass by the Bierzo Museum, located in the former Palace of the Counts of Toreno, where we'll learn about the history and traditions of the El Bierzo region. We'll also admire the nearby Convent of the Immaculate Conception before arriving at the Clock Tower, one of the few surviving gates from the city's medieval walls.
Finally, we'll make our way to Town Hall Square, where we'll admire the historic Town Hall and the nearby Macías Manor House. Finally, after 2 hours of exploring Ponferrada's rich heritage, our tour concludes on Calle Jardines, right by the iconic "Los Músicos" sculpture.
